Kukicha is a tea made from bancha tea leaves that is very popular for its taste, versatility, and low caffeine content. Bancha is a name that refers to leaves from the second Sencha harvest. Kukicha, however, is unique in that, during the harvest, the branches and twigs of the plant are picked and mixed in along with the leaves. The entire batch is then steamed to produce Kukicha (in contrast to Hojicha, which is roasted). The inclusion of the extra parts results in a distinctive flavor that can be described as nutty or creamy.
Kukicha can be drunk either hot or cold, and is very popular with children. It contains approximately 90% less caffeine than a cup of coffee, making it a perfect bedtime treat!
