Originally imported from China, Sencha is the most common green tea drunk and produced in Japan. After collection, tea leaves are steamed for anywhere between 15 to 45 seconds to prevent oxidization. The leaves are then rolled, dried, and finally pan-fired. This last step is where Sencha gets its name—a direct translation is “Roasted tea”. The roasting process gives the leaves a longer lifespan and adds flavor.
Sencha tea contains high levels of both antioxidants and caffeine, and is notorious for its many health benefits. It has been shown to prevent cancer, reduce heart disease, cholesterol, and blood pressure, and to aid in weight loss. Sencha has also been found to be linked to the preservation of neurons in the brain, as well as healing damaged neurons. Lowered stress levels, reduction of intestinal inflammation, and removal of bacteria that cause bad breath are also hallmarks of drinking this tea.

Fukamushi Sencha
“Fukamushi” literally means “Deep Steam” in Japanese, referring to the unique way this form of Sencha is made. Fukamushi Sencha is steamed anywhere from two to three times longer than regular Sencha—this makes the tea leaves coarser, and strengthens the flavor, while keeping it pleasantly mellow. Fukamushi Sencha has an intense, grassy taste, as well as a pleasant aroma.
